Learn more about our wellness exams

At Omro Animal Hospital and Winneconne Veterinary Clinic, we believe annual wellness care is imperative to keeping your pet happy and healthy! Your pet’s health is important and preventive care is necessary. We recommend wellness exams, keeping your pets on a vaccination schedule, and working with us on all facets of wellness care.

Your veterinarian will fully examine your pet during your annual physical exam and discuss vaccinations and ongoing wellness. Just like you do wellness visits with your doctor, it’s important that your pet does the same. During these visits, our team will spend time examining your pet from nose to tail.

VACCINATIONS
Our clinic has approached the vaccine protocol on what our doctors feel is in the best interest of our patients. Over the years, improvements have been made, and recommendations have changed.

We treat each animal as an individual and realize what works for one patient does not work for the next. Our doctors continue to stay updated on the changes in vaccine protocols. Our goal is to keep our patients healthy through discussions with the owner on the pet’s lifestyle, the risk to exposure, and overall health.

CORE VS. NON-CORE VACCINES
There are 2 categories when speaking of vaccines for dogs and cats. Core vaccines are recommended to be given to all pets periodically during their lifetime. Rabies is considered a core vaccine, as is the “distemper” vaccine, which is a multiway vaccine. Non-core vaccines are optional and are based on a variety of factors, such as their risk for exposure to disease.

Canine Health

Preventative care for your dog is incredibly important to your dog’s health.

Learn more about our canine health care

Preventative care for your dog will prevent serious illness and detect any conditions that affect your dog’s health. Puppies need regular visits during their first year of life. Dogs need annual exams to protect their continuing health.

OUR PUPPY SCHEDULE
We recommend bringing in your new puppy as soon as possible to give them a thorough exam and get them on their vaccine schedule. Your puppy will need to come in at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks for appointments to make sure they are growing at a normal weight, receiving the proper nutrition, and booster their vaccines. At their first visit (8 weeks), they will receive a physical exam, deworming treatment, their first DHLPP vaccine, and they will be started on heartworm and flea preventatives. At 12 weeks, they will receive their second DHLPP vaccine and their first Lyme vaccine. They may also receive a Bordatella vaccination if you plan to board them or take them to an obedience class. At 16 weeks, they will receive their annual DHLPP and Lyme vaccines and their annual Rabies vaccine. We will also check them for internal parasites with a fecal screening to ensure they are cleared of any internal parasites.

ANNUAL CANINE VISITS
We recommend annual visits for your dog throughout their life to keep them happy and healthy, as well as catch any potential changing health issues before they become too severe. They will receive a physical exam at their annual exams, any vaccine boosters they are due for, a fecal test, and heartworm testing.

VACCINES
Core vaccines for your dog include Rabies and DHLPP. Rabies is given to dogs that are at least 12 weeks old. Most municipalities require a current rabies vaccine to be licensed where they live. DHLPP is a combination vaccine given to dogs covering distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. This should be updated regularly during adulthood. Depending on different factors, it may be updated annually or every 3 years.

Non-core vaccines include Bordetella, Leptospirosis, and Lyme. Bordetella brochispetica is a bacteria that is part of the kennel cough infection. Most boarding facilities require this vaccine in order to stay at their facility. We recommend annual vaccinations, though some businesses require them every 6 months. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease in dogs and other mammals, including humans. This mainly affects the liver and kidneys. The disease is spread by contact with the urine from infected animals, while ticks transmit Lyme disease. Clinical signs in dogs are recurrent lameness and may include lack of appetite and depression. More serious complications include damage to the kidneys and even the heart or nervous system.

Our non-core vaccines are recommended based on your dog’s lifestyle, such as frequent visits to doggie daycare, exposure to deer ticks, or extensive time spent swimming or in wetlands.

Feline Health

Cats need preventative health as well to keep them living long, healthy lives.

Annual exams help protect your cat from illness and disease and detect any medical conditions your cat may have. Regular checkups are recommended for kittens and cats.

OUR KITTEN SCHEDULE
We recommend bringing in your new kitten as soon as possible to give them a thorough exam and get them on their vaccine schedule. Your kitten will need to come in at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks for appointments to ensure they are growing at a normal rate, receiving the proper nutrition, and booster their vaccines. At their first visit (8 weeks), they will receive a physical exam, deworming treatment, and their first PRCC vaccine. At 12 weeks, they will receive their second PRCC vaccine and started on a flea preventative. They will also be tested for feline leukemia or FIV and receive their first feline leukemia vaccine if they test negative. At 16 weeks, they will receive their annual PRCC and feline leukemia vaccines as well as their annual Rabies vaccine. We will also check them for internal parasites with a fecal screening to make sure they are cleared of any internal parasites.

ANNUAL FELINE VISITS
We recommend annual visits for your cat throughout their life to keep them happy and healthy, as well as catch any potential changing health issues before they become too severe. They will receive a physical exam at their annual exams, any vaccine boosters they are due for, and a fecal test.

VACCINES
Core vaccines for your cat include Rabies and PRCC. Rabies is given to kittens that are at least 12 weeks old. Most municipalities do not require a license for cats; however, a few do. A current rabies vaccine is required for licensing. PRCC is a combination vaccine that includes panleukopenia, rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and chlamydophila felis. We recommend that this vaccine be updated at least every 3 years after the cat reaches 3 years of age.

Non-core vaccines include feline leukemia (FeLV). Feline leukemia virus is most commonly found in outdoor cats, feral cats, or kittens born to these cats. The virus is infectious between cats and is spread through the contamination of body fluids and bite and scratches wounds between cats.

The infection can cause suppression of the immune system and make cats susceptible to certain forms of cancers and other diseases. The infected cat may not show symptoms but can spread the disease to other cats. Therefore, it is important to test cats for the disease.

The feline leukemia vaccine is appropriate to be given to cats that go outside routinely or lives with a cat that goes outside. The vaccine is initially given with a booster and then on an annual basis.

We make sure your pet is comfortable before, during, and after their procedure.

Learn more about our surgical services

The skilled team at Omro Animal Hospital will provide the outstanding service you want for your dogs and cats. You can put your trust in our team to give your pet compassionate and loving care during and after their surgical procedure. Our dedicated and trained veterinary staff will ensure that your pet remains safe and comfortable throughout its surgical procedure.

You can check in your dog or cat early on their surgery day. They will receive caring attention throughout their stay for surgery.

AFFORDABLE SURGICAL PROCEDURE COSTS
We keep the costs as affordable as possible for most surgical procedures. We understand that surgery can be expensive, and you want the best care possible for your pet. We have payment options available to give your pet the care they need without sacrificing the quality of care they receive.

OUR PROCEDURES
We offer a number of soft-tissue surgeries, including spays and neuters. We recommend spaying or neutering your dog or cat at six months of age. Spaying your pet early on offers the best protection from diseases like uterine infections and breast tumors, malignant or cancerous, in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. Neutering your male companion prevents testicular cancer and some prostate problems. Other added benefits include:

  • Your female pet will not go into heat once it is spayed.
  • Your male pet may better behave after the operation.
  • Your male dog will be less likely to run away from home, as un-neutered dogs will do anything to find a mate.

As of May 1, 2022, we are no longer offering declawing services.

Pain Management

Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy and laser therapy for your pet can help relieve pain.

Learn more about our pain management

Just as with human chiropractic care, Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy (V.S.M.T.) for your pet can help relieve pain without medications and possible side effects. V.S.M.T. are supposed to be noninvasive treatments performed on your pets.

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS FOR PAIN
V.S.M.T. can be an alternative treatment to invasive surgeries. It can relieve misaligned or immobile joints in the spine and help enhance flexibility and range of motion in dogs and cats.

Laser Therapy is a surgery-free, drug-free, non-invasive treatment to reduce pain, inflammation and speed healing. It uses a beam of laser light to penetrate tissues without damaging them. Laser therapy can be used to enhance other treatment plans recommended by the veterinarian. It has been used successfully to treat:

  • Wounds
  • Sprains
  • Arthritis
  • Lick granulomas
  • Chronic ear infection

V.S.M.T. INCLUDES

  • Varying treatment options depending on the need of your animal
  • Reduces the pain in pets with arthritis
  • Aligns joints so the body can heal itself

HEALING OASIS
Dr. Wright received his Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy training at The Healing Oasis Wellness Center in Sturtevant, WI, in 2011. It is a state of Wisconsin-approved post-graduate program that requires 226 hours of classroom and clinical training in small animal and equine neurology and chiropractic adjustments.

The Healing Oasis Wellness Center is one of only 2 schools approved by the state of Wisconsin. It is attended by both veterinarians and licensed chiropractors that wish to practice on animals with veterinary approval. He also received certification in Animal Chiropractic from the College of Animal Chiropractors.

Dr. Wright often blends spinal manipulation with laser therapy and, if needed, pain medication to make the pet more comfortable.
